Tanzania head coach Miguel Gamondi has unveiled a 24-man squad for the country’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against Nigeria’s Super Eagles, with domestic league champions Yanga FC and Azam FC providing the largest number of players.
The selection comes as the Taifa Stars prepare for two important encounters against Nigeria, with both teams seeking to strengthen their positions in the race for qualification for the continental tournament.
Yanga FC and Azam FC have contributed five players each to the squad, underlining the influence of the two clubs in Tanzanian football and their importance to Gamondi’s plans.
Other domestic clubs, including Kagera Sugar and Singida Black Stars, have also provided players for the national team.
The squad features a combination of locally based footballers and players competing in foreign leagues, giving the Tanzanian technical crew different options as they prepare for the Nigerian challenge.
Among the foreign-based selections are Novatus Miroshi, who plays for Turkish club Göztepe, Cyprian Kachewele of Ukraine’s Kryvbas and Bernard Kamongo of FC Dallas in the United States.
Gamondi will be hoping the selected players can deliver improved performances as Tanzania seek to overcome one of the continent’s established football nations.
The upcoming fixtures will see the Taifa Stars travel to Nigeria for the first encounter before hosting the Super Eagles in the return fixture in Dar es Salaam.
Nigeria will have the advantage of playing the opening match at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, where the Super Eagles will be expected to secure a positive result before travelling for the return encounter.
Tanzania’s qualifying campaign has so far been challenging. The team opened its campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau before recording a 1-1 draw against Madagascar.
Nigeria, meanwhile, have also experienced mixed results, securing a 2-1 victory over Madagascar in Uyo before suffering a 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau away from home.
The results have increased the importance of the forthcoming meetings, with both sides needing valuable points to improve their chances of progressing to the 2027 AFCON tournament.
For Tanzania, the selection of players from Yanga FC and Azam FC could provide familiarity and understanding, given the players’ experience competing together in the domestic league.

The Super Eagles, however, will be expected to draw on their greater international experience and individual quality to overcome the East African side.
The two encounters are expected to provide an important test for both teams as the qualifying campaign continues.
Gamondi’s 24-man selection signals Tanzania’s readiness for the challenge, while Nigeria will be keen to avoid another disappointing result and strengthen their qualification ambitions.
