Outgoing President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, has credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with helping to reduce political and security tensions across West Africa and strengthening regional integration.

Touray made the remarks after a farewell audience with Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, ahead of the expiration of the current ECOWAS Commission’s mandate at the end of August.

He described Tinubu as a committed statesman whose leadership had been instrumental in providing direction to the sub-region at critical moments.

“If today we are saying tensions have reduced in West Africa, we should give credit to President Tinubu and Nigeria,” Touray told State House correspondents.

The outgoing ECOWAS chief said Nigeria’s strategic importance to West Africa remained unquestionable, noting that the country’s leadership had consistently played a central role whenever the region faced political and security challenges.

He also commended the contributions of Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and other members of the Federal Executive Council to regional diplomacy.

“Nigeria’s role in West Africa remains extremely important. I am happy the President appreciates this responsibility,” Touray said.

According to him, Nigeria’s influence within ECOWAS extends beyond its size and economic strength, with the country carrying a significant responsibility for maintaining regional stability and advancing integration.

Touray said his visit to the Presidential Villa was primarily to express appreciation to Tinubu for the support and guidance he received during his tenure as head of the ECOWAS Commission.

“President Tinubu has been a pillar of the region. We could not leave office without thanking him for the role he has played, and continues to play, not only for Nigeria but for the entire region and Africa,” he said.

He described his two-year tenure as an opportunity to work closely with the Nigerian leader and praised Tinubu’s openness, generosity and commitment to the objectives of ECOWAS.

Touray said he felt privileged to have worked with the President, particularly benefiting from his counsel and experience on regional issues.

His comments come against the backdrop of persistent political and security challenges that have tested the cohesion of ECOWAS, including military takeovers in parts of the sub-region and tensions over the future of regional integration.

Nigeria has historically played a leading role in ECOWAS, using its political, diplomatic and economic influence to support regional cooperation and stability.

Touray’s acknowledgement therefore places renewed emphasis on the importance of Nigeria’s continued engagement with West African neighbours as the region seeks to strengthen integration and address emerging political and security challenges.

The outgoing commission president’s farewell visit also marks the transition to a new phase of ECOWAS leadership as the current commission’s mandate ends later in August.
