The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted consignments of cocaine concealed inside a local mortar and the false bottom of a backpack destined for China and Italy, while arresting suspected drug traffickers in Rivers, Anambra, Delta, Nasarawa and Zamfara states during coordinated operations across the country.

The agency said the seizures and arrests were part of its sustained efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks and curb the circulation of illicit substances nationwide.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed that operatives of the Directorate of Operations and General Investigations (DOGI) uncovered the concealed cocaine at a logistics company in Lagos on Thursday.

According to him, officers recovered 250 grams of cocaine expertly hidden inside the base of a locally made mortar packaged for shipment to China. In a separate interception, another 500 grams of cocaine was discovered concealed in the false bottom of a backpack billed for export to Italy.

Babafemi said the discoveries highlighted the increasingly sophisticated methods employed by drug traffickers in attempts to evade security checks.

In Rivers State, NDLEA operatives arrested a 38-year-old suspect, Ugo Gift Okonkwo, at Eagle Island in Port Harcourt following intelligence-led surveillance. During the operation conducted on July 26, officers recovered cannabis, cocaine, methamphetamine, swinol, tramadol and codeine syrup from the suspect.

The agency also recorded a major seizure in Anambra State, where officers on stop-and-search duty at the DMGS Roundabout in Onitsha intercepted a truck marked XK 131 BDG carrying 26,000 bottles of codeine syrup weighing 3,960 kilograms. The truck driver, 40-year-old Chinedu Nwanze, was arrested in connection with the shipment.

In Delta State, operatives recovered 331.84 kilograms of skunk concealed in a Toyota Sienna bus with registration number KUJ 26 DV along the Kwale-Ughelli Expressway.

Similarly, in Nasarawa State, a 64-year-old suspect, Joseph Nwaeke, was apprehended in the Asso Angwan Muazu area of Karu with 68 kilograms of skunk and 29 grams of methamphetamine.

In another operation, NDLEA officers on patrol along the Zaria-Gusau highway in Zamfara State intercepted 27-year-old Sani Umar with 7,400 tablets of 225mg tramadol, which the agency suspects were being transported to criminal elements operating in the region.

Beyond enforcement, Babafemi said the agency continued its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitisation campaign through lectures and awareness programmes held in schools, workplaces, worship centres and motor parks across the country, including institutions in Kano, Oyo and Taraba states.

NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Buba Marwa, commended officers of the Directorate of Operations and General Investigations and the commands involved in the operations for their vigilance. He urged personnel to sustain the agency’s dual strategy of reducing both drug supply and drug demand as part of efforts to combat substance abuse and trafficking nationwide.
