Nigerian Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has fiercely defended his long-standing friendship with Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
This comes after critics labeled the music icon performative and pretentious following his sudden public outcry regarding the harsh economic and social realities currently plaguing the nation.
The drama unfolded on social media after Davido uncharacteristically called out his colleagues in the entertainment industry for staying silent during trying times.
Acknowledging his own past silence, the singer lamented the deep-seated corruption and injustice in the country, declaring that Nigeria was fast deteriorating.
“I can’t lie, we entertainers, we dey fuck up, I wouldn’t lie, including me,” Davido expressed using Nigerian Pidgin English. “We need to speak up, it’s too much injustice going on. Our country don go.”

While some fans applauded his boldness, many others were deeply skeptical. A prominent social media user quickly slammed the Unavailable hitmaker, accusing him of putting on a media show for public validation.
The critic pointed out that Davido belongs to the inner social circles of the ruling class, alleging that the singer is an active member of an elite “City Boys” group chat alongside Seyi Tinubu.
“Na God go punish you and your family,” the angered netizen tweeted, dismissing the singer’s empathy. “Go and do that performative rubbish in your City Boys group chat and get tf out of my face with all this pretentious nonsense. Na foolish Nigerians I blame.”
Refusing to back down, Davido clapped back with a detailed response to set the record straight. He adamantly denied the existence of any such group chat and reminded the public that when he previously criticized the Nigerian government on major American media platforms, the same citizens had attacked him.
Crucially, Davido addressed his relationship with the president’s son. He clarified that while he and Seyi Tinubu have been close friends for over a decade, their bond is strictly personal and does not influence his political stance.
He went on to reveal that he frequently uses his access to confront Seyi directly about the suffering of everyday Nigerians.
“I no Dey part of any city boy group,” Davido retorted. “When I called out the government on American media, you guys rained curses on me.
I’ve been friends with ST [Seyi Tinubu] for years, and that’s where it stops, and I call and complain to him all the time, even in person. God Punish ur generation.”
The explosive exchange has ignited a fierce debate online. While some fans defend Davido’s right to maintain private friendships irrespective of politics, others argue that influential celebrities must choose between their billionaire privileges and truly standing in solidarity with the struggling masses.
