Golden Eaglets

The Nigerian Golden Eaglets suffered their second consecutive defeat at the four nation invitational tournament in China.

The national youth team fell 4 to 2 to Australia in an entertaining encounter during the early hours of Wednesday.

Under the guidance of coach Eboboritse Uwejamomere, the team is currently undergoing a massive rebuilding phase. This restructure comes after the squad missed out on two consecutive editions of the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Despite being five-time FIFA U-17 World Cup champions, the Golden Eaglets remain rooted to the bottom of the tournament standings.

The team has conceded a total of seven goals and scored only four in their opening two matches of the competition.

Uwejamomere and his squad opened their campaign with a disappointing 3 to 2 defeat against Tanzania. They hoped to bounce back against the Australians, but defensive lapses once again proved costly.

The Joeys capitalized on several key opportunities to secure a deserved victory over the Nigerian side.

The recent result means Nigeria has now conceded seven goals in just two matches. This serves as a worrying statistic for a side traditionally renowned for its attacking flair and highly successful youth development system.

Despite their difficult start to the tournament, the Golden Eaglets still have an opportunity to finish their campaign on a positive note.

The Nigerian youngsters will face the tournament hosts, China, on Saturday. The upcoming match will give the team another valuable opportunity to gain international experience and test themselves against quality opposition.

The ongoing invitational tournament serves as a crucial part of the preparations for the Golden Eaglets. The team is getting ready for the WAFU B U-17 Championship scheduled to take place in September.

That regional competition will act as the official qualifying tournament for the upcoming U-17 Africa Cup of Nations next year.
