Nigeria’s First Lady has called on mothers across the country to exclusively breastfeed their babies during the first six months of life, describing breastfeeding as one of the most effective ways to improve child survival and maternal health.

The appeal was made during activities marking World Breastfeeding Week, where she encouraged families, healthcare workers and communities to support nursing mothers.

She said exclusive breastfeeding provides infants with essential nutrients needed for healthy growth while protecting them against infections, malnutrition and other childhood illnesses.

The First Lady noted that breastfeeding also benefits mothers by reducing the risk of certain diseases and strengthening the bond between mother and child.

She urged employers to create breastfeeding-friendly workplaces by providing flexible working arrangements and suitable facilities for nursing mothers returning from maternity leave.

According to her, increasing awareness about breastfeeding would help reduce infant mortality and improve the country’s overall health outcomes.

She praised healthcare professionals for promoting maternal and child health and encouraged traditional and religious leaders to support public awareness campaigns.

The First Lady also appealed to fathers and family members to provide emotional and practical support to nursing mothers.

Health experts at the event explained that exclusive breastfeeding for six months remains one of the most cost-effective interventions for preventing childhood diseases and ensuring proper nutrition.

They warned against the early introduction of water, formula or complementary foods unless medically advised.

Officials from the Federal Ministry of Health reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving maternal healthcare services and expanding nutrition programmes across primary healthcare centres.

Medical practitioners also stressed the importance of continued breastfeeding alongside complementary feeding until children are at least two years old.

The First Lady said improving maternal nutrition, strengthening healthcare services and increasing breastfeeding awareness would contribute significantly to achieving better health outcomes for women and children nationwide.

She called on all Nigerians to work together in creating an environment where every mother receives the support needed to breastfeed successfully and give every child the healthiest possible start in life.
