President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a three-day national mourning period for Nigerian Air Force personnel who died in an aircraft crash in Ondo State.

The President also directed that the national flag be flown at half-mast across the country throughout the mourning period in honour of the fallen personnel.

The Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft crashed near a naval base in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State on Monday while reportedly operating a routine mission from Benin to Lagos.

The aircraft was carrying 25 passengers and seven crew members when the accident occurred.

Tinubu, in a condolence message to the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and officers and personnel of the Nigerian Air Force, described the incident as a painful moment for the Armed Forces and the nation.

The President commended the sacrifice of military personnel who risk their lives daily in the service of the country, saying the fallen officers would not be forgotten.

“The Chief of Air Staff has briefed me, and I have directed the Nigerian Air Force to immediately commence a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash to prevent future occurrences,” Tinubu said.

He also commended the Nigerian Air Force for promptly activating search and rescue operations following the crash.

The identities of the personnel who died in the accident are expected to be released by the Air Force after their families have been contacted.

The crash comes as the Nigerian military continues to face significant operational demands in its efforts to protect lives and maintain national security.

The President’s declaration of national mourning is expected to provide a period for the country to honour the deceased personnel and recognise their service and sacrifice to Nigeria.
