Former Edo State Governor and Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has launched fresh attacks on former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, questioning their leadership records and suitability to lead Nigeria ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Oshiomhole made the remarks on Monday during an All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign rally in Calabar, Cross River State, where he canvassed support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.

The senator questioned Obi’s promise to serve only one four-year term if elected president, arguing that the former Anambra governor had not demonstrated sufficient capacity to transform the country within the proposed period.

Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election and is now associated with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), had previously pledged to serve only one term if elected president in 2027.

Reacting to the pledge, Oshiomhole challenged Obi to explain how he intended to address Nigeria’s challenges within four years when, according to him, he had failed to adequately resolve Anambra State’s problems during his eight-year tenure as governor.

The former governor described the proposal as an unrealistic political promise, questioning the capacity of opposition politicians to deliver the changes they advocate.

He said: “If Peter Obi could not fix Anambra State in eight years, how can he look you korokoro in the eye and say he only needs four years?”

Oshiomhole also criticised former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, accusing him of being disconnected from the daily realities of Nigerians.

He alleged that Atiku spends much of his time in Dubai and returns to Nigeria mainly when presidential elections approach.

The senator further predicted that Atiku would lose the 2027 presidential election and return to Dubai afterwards.

His comments followed criticism attributed to Atiku concerning Tinubu’s decision to travel to Saudi Arabia for religious prayers at a time Nigeria continues to face economic and security challenges.

Oshiomhole defended the President’s pilgrimage, arguing that religious devotion should not be interpreted as a failure to address national responsibilities.

He also urged Nigerians to support Tinubu, crediting the administration with taking difficult economic decisions aimed at repositioning the country.

The remarks form part of the growing political exchanges between the ruling APC and opposition figures as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.

Both Atiku and Obi remain prominent figures in Nigeria’s opposition politics, with their records, political alliances and proposed policies expected to feature prominently in the coming electoral contest.

Oshiomhole’s comments have further intensified the debate over leadership credentials, governance performance and the competing political visions being presented to Nigerians ahead of the next presidential election.

However, the criticisms represent the senator’s political assessments, with the records of the opposition figures remaining subjects of wider public debate.
