Owerri–Mbaise

Rising along the Owerri–Mbaise–Umuahia Road, the Imo Digital City is emerging as one of the most ambitious technology infrastructure projects in southeastern Nigeria, with the Imo State Government positioning it as a catalyst for innovation, job creation and digital economic growth.

The project, showcased during the three-day Renewed Hope Ambassadors National Media Tour and inspection by the Presidential Communications Team, drew commendation from federal officials and senior journalists who described it as a strategic investment capable of transforming Imo into a leading technology and innovation destination.

Designed as a modern digital ecosystem, the Imo Digital City is expected to provide technology-driven businesses, startups, researchers and young innovators with world-class facilities to develop digital solutions and compete in the global knowledge economy.

Officials said the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises digital innovation, economic diversification, youth empowerment and increased private sector participation in national development.

Speaking during the inspection, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, said the project demonstrated how states were deploying increased revenues from the Federal Government’s economic reforms to execute impactful development initiatives.

According to him, the Digital City represents one of several landmark projects that reflect the collaboration between the Federal Government and Imo State in translating economic reforms into visible infrastructure that directly benefits citizens.

The facility is expected to serve as a hub for software development, digital entrepreneurship, artificial intelligence research, innovation incubation, business process outsourcing and technology-enabled services, creating opportunities for thousands of young people across the state and beyond.

Officials noted that beyond physical infrastructure, the project is intended to nurture a digitally skilled workforce by providing training programmes, innovation centres and partnerships with educational institutions and private technology companies.

Governor Hope Uzodimma has consistently maintained that digital technology remains central to his administration’s strategy for sustainable economic development, arguing that investment in innovation will reduce unemployment while attracting both local and international investors.

Members of the Presidential Communications Team and over 40 senior journalists who toured the facility described it as one of the flagship projects capable of reshaping Imo’s economic landscape.

Speaking on behalf of the visiting journalists, veteran journalist Dr. Soni Daniel commended the state’s investment in digital infrastructure, saying the project demonstrated a deliberate effort to prepare young people for opportunities in the rapidly expanding global digital economy.

Daniel noted that the Digital City complements other major projects undertaken by the Uzodimma administration, including road infrastructure, healthcare facilities, educational institutions and convention centres, all aimed at accelerating economic transformation.

Industry observers say the project could significantly improve the state’s competitiveness by attracting technology companies, startups and investors seeking a conducive environment for innovation.

They also believe the development could reduce the migration of skilled young professionals by creating employment opportunities within the state while encouraging entrepreneurship and digital enterprise.

As construction and development continue, expectations remain high that the Imo Digital City will become a major technology ecosystem capable of driving innovation, expanding digital inclusion and contributing to Nigeria’s broader transition to a knowledge-based economy.

For Imo State, the project represents more than another infrastructure investment; it reflects an ambition to build a future where technology, innovation and human capital become the pillars of long-term economic prosperity.
