Goodluck Jonathan

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki has reaffirmed that former President Goodluck Jonathan remains a committed member of the party, dismissing speculations of a possible defection ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the faction’s spokesperson, Ini Ememobong, described as false and misleading the circulation of campaign posters suggesting that Jonathan would contest the 2027 presidential election under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or any other political party.

Ememobong said the posters, which have surfaced across social media platforms and in some public spaces, were the handiwork of mischief makers seeking to create confusion within the opposition party and mislead Nigerians about Jonathan’s political stance.

He stressed that the former president has not authorised any individual or group to campaign on his behalf for the 2027 elections, nor has he indicated interest in contesting under any party outside the PDP. According to him, Jonathan remains a respected leader within the PDP and continues to play a stabilising role in the party.

“The attention of the party has been drawn to the circulation of posters purporting that former President Goodluck Jonathan will contest the 2027 presidential election under a different political platform. We wish to categorically state that these claims are unfounded and should be disregarded,” the statement read.

The faction further noted that attempts to link Jonathan with another party were aimed at causing internal disaffection and weakening the PDP’s cohesion ahead of future political contests. It urged party members and the general public to ignore the posters and rely only on official communications from recognised party channels.

Political observers say Jonathan’s name continues to feature in conversations about Nigeria’s political future due to his perceived national appeal and experience. However, he has largely maintained a low profile in partisan politics since leaving office in 2015.

The Turaki-led faction reiterated its commitment to unity within the PDP, calling on members to remain focused and avoid distractions that could undermine the party’s preparations for upcoming electoral engagements.

As discussions around the 2027 elections gradually gain momentum, the PDP faces the challenge of managing internal divisions while projecting a united front capable of mounting a strong challenge at the polls.
