The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the party’s ongoing primaries as the most competitive in Nigeria’s political history, citing overwhelming participation and growing national acceptance, following a meeting with Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Lagos on Wednesday.

Speaking to press men after the visit, the chairman said the sheer number of aspirants contesting for limited positions reflects both the strength and expanding reach of the ruling party across the country.

He noted that thousands of party members are actively seeking leadership roles under the APC platform, underscoring what he called its position as the “first choice” for Nigerians with political ambitions.

He credited the party’s grassroots penetration and nationwide appeal for the high level of engagement, adding that the primaries have so far been largely peaceful and well-organised.

According to him, despite isolated complaints typical of any electoral process, the exercise has remained “near perfect,” with minimal disruptions recorded.

Addressing concerns over disagreements in some states, including disputes over consensus arrangements, the chairman maintained that the party’s guidelines are clear and have been strictly followed.

He explained that where consensus fails, direct primaries are adopted, ensuring fairness and inclusiveness. He stressed that no aspirant has been forced into consensus, as all agreements require voluntary endorsement through signed forms.

On the issue of aggrieved members, the APC leader acknowledged that post-primary tensions are inevitable but assured that the party has established mechanisms to manage disputes.

He pointed to both the Presidential and Party Conflict Resolution Committees as key structures already working to reconcile differences and foster unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He said the focus remains on early conflict resolution to enable the party consolidate and prepare for a successful campaign cycle.

Providing insight into the President’s reaction, the chairman revealed that Tinubu expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the primaries, particularly commending the logistics, planning, and reduced incidents of violence across states.

He described the deployment of nationwide direct primaries as a significant organisational achievement.

The chairman also thanked the President for his continued support, noting that Tinubu’s backing has strengthened the National Working Committee’s ability to enforce party rules and ensure discipline throughout the process.

He expressed optimism that the APC would emerge more united and better positioned for victory in 2027.
