The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for political parties to submit the names of their candidates for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections to midnight on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

The commission announced the extension in a statement issued on Sunday, following appeals from the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), which cited challenges faced by some parties in completing the nomination process before the initial deadline of Saturday, July 11.

INEC said the decision was aimed at ensuring fairness and giving all political parties adequate time to upload the names and personal particulars of their candidates on its Candidate Nomination Portal.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission has approved the extension of the deadline for submission of lists of candidates for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly Elections by political parties,” the statement read.

It added that the earlier deadline in the Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities had now been adjusted to accommodate affected parties.

“The deadline for submission in the Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election being Saturday, July 11, 2026, has been extended to midnight on Tuesday, July 14, 2026,” INEC stated.

The statement was signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.

According to the commission, the extension followed a formal request by IPAC on behalf of political parties that were unable to meet the original timeline due to technical and logistical constraints.

“The decision to extend was based on appeal by the Inter-Party Advisory Council on behalf of political parties who were unable to upload the names and personal particulars of their candidates within the scheduled timeline,” the commission said.

The extension provides a critical window for parties still finalising internal processes, including primaries, substitutions and documentation of candidates contesting for the presidency and seats in the National Assembly.

Political analysts say the move could help prevent disputes arising from rushed submissions and reduce the likelihood of errors that may lead to disqualification or legal challenges.

INEC has consistently emphasised adherence to its electoral timetable as a key component of credible elections, while also allowing limited flexibility in response to stakeholder concerns.

With the revised deadline now in place, attention will shift to compliance by political parties and the commission’s subsequent verification process ahead of the 2027 general election.
