South-East Infrastructure Boom Gains Federal Backing

A coordinated federal inspection tour across the South-East has spotlighted accelerating infrastructure delivery in Ebonyi, Abia, and Enugu States, with the Presidency expressing satisfaction over what it described as visible results of strengthened collaboration between the centre and subnational governments under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Renewed Hope Ambassadors Media Tour, led by senior presidential aides including Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, and Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, assessed ongoing federal and state projects across the region, reinforcing the administration’s message that increased fiscal allocations are translating into tangible development.

In Ebonyi State, the delegation commended the scale of ongoing works, particularly the Trans-Sahara Superhighway corridor linking several northern and south-eastern states to Abuja. The team also inspected rural road networks such as the Izeagu-Azulu axis, modern housing estates for civil servants, and major urban renewal projects including the Vanco Junction infrastructure corridor with flyovers and tunnels.

Onanuga noted that improved federal allocations have enabled states to pursue projects that were previously out of reach. He highlighted Ebonyi’s expansion into large-scale investments such as a five-star hotel project, new smart schools, and health facilities, describing them as evidence of increased fiscal space at the subnational level.

In Abia State, attention focused on both federal and state-driven infrastructure renewal. The delegation inspected the Ohafia–Umuahia corridor, the 67.6-kilometre Umuahia–Uzuakoli–Ohafia road, and ongoing rehabilitation of the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway. The Renewed Hope Housing Estate in Umuahia, planned for 1,200 housing units, was also highlighted as one of the largest federal housing interventions in the South-East.

Transport infrastructure such as the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal and upgrades to key federal highways were also showcased, with residents expressing optimism that improved roads and housing projects are stimulating commerce and easing movement across communities.

In Enugu State, Governor Peter Mbah credited recent infrastructure acceleration to improved revenues following federal reforms. He said enhanced allocations from the Federation Account had freed up resources for capital projects, allowing the state to expand investments in roads, healthcare, education, and security architecture.

The delegation inspected major projects including the Enugu–Onitsha–Port Harcourt concrete pavement road, the dualisation of the Enugu Airport Road, flyover interchanges, a tractors assembly plant, and the Enugu International Specialist Hospital. Smart schools and the emerging smart city project were also presented as part of a broader urban transformation plan.

Onanuga praised the scale of collaboration between federal and state governments, noting that the Renewed Hope Agenda is increasingly visible through infrastructure delivery and improved service access across regions.

Across the three states, a common theme emerged: increased federal support is reshaping development priorities at the state level. Officials and stakeholders said the reforms have eased fiscal pressure, allowing governments to move beyond salary obligations into capital-intensive projects.

The Renewed Hope Media Tour continues as part of a nationwide assessment exercise aimed at tracking implementation of federal projects and demonstrating how policy decisions at the centre are impacting communities on the ground.
