The Nigerian Railway Corporation NRC, has reported a significant rise in cargo movement through the Apapa Port rail corridor, with a total of 176,820 tonnes transported in the first quarter of 2026.

According to the Q1 operational report, freight operations linked to Apapa Port, particularly through APM Terminals and ENL Consortium, recorded a combined 198 freight trips during the period, reflecting growing use of rail for port cargo evacuation.

APM Terminals accounted for the largest share of rail movement, handling about 129,240 tonnes, while ENL terminals moved 47,580 tonnes. The report also noted that the standard gauge operations dominated overall performance, supported by a smaller number of narrow-gauge services.

Monthly performance showed steady growth, with March emerging as the busiest month for APM Terminals, driven by higher freight volumes compared to January and February.

Other logistics operators, including container and bulk cargo handlers such as CCECC Track Access, Depotter, Ajuba Containers, and Starlink, also contributed to rail cargo throughput across the corridor.

The NRC said the performance underscores the increasing acceptance of rail transport as a viable alternative to road haulage, especially for bulk and containerized cargo.

It added that expanding rail usage is helping to reduce congestion at Lagos ports, lower logistics costs, and ease pressure on surrounding road networks.

Industry stakeholders continue to advocate for stronger multimodal transport integration, noting that a large share of Nigeria’s port cargo still moves by road despite ongoing rail rehabilitation efforts.
