The Federal Government has announced plans to roll out 10,000 electric tricycles across Nigeria beginning in August, in a move aimed at promoting clean energy and reducing transportation costs. The initiative is part of broader efforts to transition the country toward sustainable mobility solutions.
Officials say the e-tricycles will be distributed across major cities and rural communities, providing an affordable alternative to conventional fuel-powered transport. The programme is also expected to create thousands of jobs, particularly for young people in the transport sector.
According to the Ministry of Transportation, the deployment will be carried out in phases, with priority given to areas facing high transportation costs and limited access to reliable mobility. The government noted that the initiative aligns with its commitment to reducing carbon emissions and tackling climate change.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the development, describing it as a timely intervention amid rising fuel prices. They, however, stressed the need for supporting infrastructure such as charging stations and maintenance hubs to ensure the sustainability of the project.
Experts also pointed out that the success of the programme will depend on effective implementation and public acceptance. They urged the government to engage local communities and transport unions to avoid resistance and ensure smooth adoption.
In addition to environmental benefits, the e-tricycles are expected to improve last-mile connectivity, especially in underserved areas. Authorities say the initiative will also reduce noise pollution and contribute to a cleaner urban environment.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to expanding the programme if successful, with plans to introduce more electric vehicles into the public transport system. Analysts see the project as a significant step toward modernising Nigeria’s transportation sector while addressing economic and environmental challenges.
