A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) backed by former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, has announced the successful upload of its presidential, vice-presidential and National Assembly candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Candidate Nomination Portal ahead of the 2027 general election.

The faction’s National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, describing the development as a major step toward the group’s full participation in the upcoming polls.

Mohammed said the submission reflects the faction’s readiness to contest and its determination to remain a key player in Nigeria’s political landscape despite internal divisions within the PDP.

“I am pleased to inform all PDP members and Nigerians that our great party, under my leadership, has successfully uploaded the names of our presidential candidate, his running mate, and our National Assembly candidates onto the INEC Candidate Nomination Portal,” he said.

He added that the move fulfilled a core promise made under his leadership to ensure the faction’s active involvement in the 2027 elections.

“This is a clear demonstration of our commitment to the promise we made that, under my leadership, the PDP will fully participate in the 2027 General Elections. Today, we have taken another decisive step towards fulfilling that promise,” Mohammed stated.

The announcement comes amid ongoing leadership disputes within the PDP, with multiple factions laying claim to the party’s structure and direction. The Wike-backed bloc has consistently insisted on its legitimacy and readiness to present candidates across all levels.

Political observers say the development could further deepen internal tensions within the opposition party, especially as rival factions may also seek to submit separate candidate lists to the electoral body.

INEC’s Candidate Nomination Portal is a critical stage in the electoral process, allowing political parties to formally submit details of their candidates for verification and participation in elections.

While the electoral commission has yet to publicly comment on the latest submission, analysts note that disputes over candidate lists and party leadership could trigger legal battles that may shape the PDP’s prospects ahead of the 2027 polls.

Despite the uncertainties, Mohammed expressed confidence in the faction’s structure and strategy, urging members and supporters to remain united.

He reiterated that the group would continue to engage with stakeholders and mobilise support nationwide, positioning itself as a viable alternative in the next general election.

The PDP, once Nigeria’s dominant political force, continues to grapple with internal divisions that have affected its cohesion and electoral strength in recent years.
