Despite intense competition among Nigeria’s major telecommunications operators, millions of subscribers continue to grapple with rising internet costs, raising questions about why data prices remain high in one of Africa’s largest telecom markets.

Industry analysts say the answer lies beyond rivalry between service providers. Competition remains intense, but it is increasingly focused on network quality, innovation and customer experience rather than dramatic price reductions.

For consumers, meaningful reductions in data prices are likely to depend not only on competitive pressure but also on improvements in electricity supply, macroeconomic stability, exchange rate management, infrastructure development and supportive regulatory policies.

Until those structural challenges are addressed, telecommunications companies are expected to continue balancing affordability with the substantial cost of building and maintaining the digital infrastructure that powers Nigeria’s fast-growing internet economy.
