President Tinubu was right that the FG is still clearing the mess created by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as it recently paid N18bn outstanding benefits to 2,100 former Nigeria Airways workers thrown into poverty by Atiku more than two decades ago, with payments to another 600 beneficiaries being finalised.
In Obasanjo’s time, the government decided to liquidate the NIgerian airways after it’s privatization attempts failed in 2003.
At the time, Atiku was Chairman of NCP that liquidated the Airways. The liquidation was poorly done and did not result in a clean sale. Instead, it ended in massive unresolved liabilities.
Why? Because of corruption.

Atiku Abubakar was accused of poor handling and heavy criticism regarding how the liquidation program was carried out.
Several allegations were brought against him by Senate probes, and public critics:
1. He neglected and abandoned defunct workers by liquidating the Airways without proper safety net for its staff, thereby throwing several families into poverty and hunger.
2. He failed to secure or pay the severance packages and pension entitlements of thousands of retired aviation workers running into billions.
3. These workers were left stranded for decades until APC administration under Buhari began clearing the unpaid obligations.
4. Atiku was accused of cronyism and favoritism. He is said to have sold assets to “Friends” who are close business associates, family, or political cronies at give away price.
5. Atiku was also accused of deliberate asset undervaluation and stripping. Under his watch, lucrative national assets were treated as a “yard sale”, allowing these entities to be sold well below their actual market value, resulting in massive financial losses for the federal government while enriching private interests.
6. Excessive “Sabotage”. He was accused of using his oversight of contract awards and privatization bids to build economic leverage for himself, prompting Obasanjo to bypass the NCP entirely and deal with the BPE directly because he could no longer trust Atiku.
Ironically, the same Atiku is unapologetic and is talking about poverty and hunger. He is asking to be trusted with public assets again.
