President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has received Jim Ovia, founder of Zenith Bank and chairman of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The meeting, held on Tuesday, October 20, comes as the Federal Government continues to implement its student loan programme aimed at widening access to higher education for Nigerian students.
Ovia, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s banking industry, was appointed chairman of the NELFUND board by Tinubu in April 2024 to help steer the administration of the national student loan initiative.
The programme was established to reduce financial barriers to tertiary education by providing eligible students with access to loans for their studies.
Although the specific agenda of Tuesday’s meeting was not officially disclosed, Ovia’s position at the helm of NELFUND places him at the centre of efforts to expand access to education financing and strengthen the programme’s implementation.
The student loan scheme forms part of the Federal Government’s broader education reform agenda, with the objective of ensuring that financial difficulties do not prevent qualified young Nigerians from pursuing higher education.
