CANEX

Lagos State is preparing to welcome about 10,000 participants from Nigeria, Africa and other parts of the world for the Creative Africa Nexus Weekend, CANEX 2026, scheduled to hold in Lagos from November 5 to 8.

The four-day event is being positioned by the Federal Government as a major platform for connecting Africa’s creative industries with investors, financiers, technology companies, distributors and international markets.

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, said the event would go beyond showcasing African creativity by creating opportunities for trade, investment, financing, enterprise development and market access.

She said Nigeria’s large creative economy provides an opportunity for the country to capture greater economic value from its music, film, fashion, literature, visual arts, gastronomy, sports and technology sectors.

Lagos, as host state, has activated government agencies and relevant stakeholders to prepare for the expected influx of visitors.

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Tudioni Bandu, said the state was deploying resources to facilitate movement, access and general coordination during the event.

According to the state government, infrastructure and the environment around the venue are being upgraded ahead of the programme.

Health authorities have also activated disease surveillance and emergency-response arrangements in anticipation of the international gathering.

The preparations involve several government institutions, reflecting the scale of the event and the number of sectors expected to participate.

The Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment is working with the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, as well as agencies responsible for foreign affairs, finance, customs, immigration and other areas.

The Lagos State Government is also collaborating with relevant ministries, departments and agencies to ensure that visitors can access the event venue and move around the city efficiently.

CANEX 2026 will feature programmes covering music, film, fashion, gastronomy, literature, visual arts, sports and technology.

Investment and financing sessions will also form part of the programme, with organisers seeking to connect creative businesses with capital and international markets.

Each of Nigeria’s 36 states is expected to have a pavilion, providing opportunities to display products, cultural assets, creative enterprises and investment opportunities.

The event will also coincide with the 50th anniversary of the construction of the National Theatre, a landmark associated with FESTAC ’77.

Officials have described CANEX as part of a wider strategy to position Nigeria as a destination for African trade, investment and creative enterprise.

The country is also preparing to host the 2027 Intra-African Trade Fair in Lagos, providing another platform for Nigerian businesses to connect with markets across the continent.

With thousands of visitors expected, the success of CANEX 2026 will depend not only on the creative programmes but also on transportation, hospitality, security, healthcare and other support services required to manage an international event of its scale.
