Atiku Abubakar

A fresh internal crisis is brewing within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a faction led by Nafiu intensifies moves to challenge the influence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar within the party.

Sources within the party indicate that the faction is pushing for structural reforms and a rebalancing of leadership power, accusing Atiku’s loyalists of dominating key decision-making processes. The group is said to be mobilising support across state chapters to push through its agenda ahead of upcoming political activities.

The dispute underscores growing tensions within the ADC, which has been positioning itself as an alternative platform in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape. Party insiders say disagreements over strategy, leadership direction, and control of party structures have been simmering for months before now coming to the surface.

Members of the Nafiu faction argue that internal democracy must be strengthened to ensure inclusiveness and fairness, warning that continued concentration of influence could weaken the party’s credibility. They have called for transparent processes in candidate selection and leadership appointments.

Meanwhile, supporters of Atiku within the party have dismissed the moves as unnecessary, insisting that the former vice president’s involvement has helped boost the party’s visibility and political relevance. They argue that efforts to sideline him could undermine unity at a critical time.

Political analysts say the outcome of the tussle could shape the ADC’s future, particularly as parties begin to strategise ahead of forthcoming elections. A prolonged crisis, they warn, may affect the party’s ability to present a cohesive front.

Efforts to resolve the dispute are ongoing, with some party elders reportedly stepping in to mediate between the factions. However, it remains unclear whether a compromise will be reached in the coming weeks.
