Tinubu Swears In Abel Enitan As Head of Civil Service

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sworn in Mr Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan as the new Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, succeeding Mrs Didi Esther Walson-Jack, who retired after attaining the statutory retirement age of 60.

The swearing-in ceremony took place on Thursday at the State House, Abuja, as the Federal Government formally commenced the transition to a new leadership of the country’s civil service.

Enitan’s appointment was announced by the Presidency on August 19, 2026, with effect from August 27, 2026.

He takes over from Walson-Jack, who served as Head of the Civil Service of the Federation before her retirement at the mandatory age.

The ceremony was attended by the Permanent Secretary, State House, Temitope Fashedemi, as well as other senior government officials.

The appointment places Enitan at the helm of Nigeria’s federal civil service, where he is expected to provide administrative leadership and support the implementation of government policies across ministries, departments and agencies.

As Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Enitan will be responsible for providing strategic direction to the federal bureaucracy and strengthening the effectiveness and efficiency of public administration.

His assumption of office comes as the Tinubu administration continues efforts to reform the public service and improve government delivery.

The Head of Service position is central to the coordination of the federal civil service, particularly in ensuring that government policies are effectively translated into programmes and services for citizens.

The transition also marks the end of Walson-Jack’s tenure following her attainment of the statutory retirement age.

Her departure follows a long career in public service and comes as the administration seeks to maintain continuity while introducing fresh leadership into the federal bureaucracy.

Enitan is expected to work with permanent secretaries and other senior officials across government to strengthen coordination, institutional performance and accountability.

The new Head of Service will also play a key role in supporting the administration’s broader public sector reforms, including efforts to improve productivity, professionalism and service delivery within the federal civil service.

President Tinubu’s administration has repeatedly emphasised the need for an efficient and responsive public service capable of supporting its economic and governance agenda.

The appointment of Enitan therefore comes at a critical period as the government seeks to ensure that reforms translate into measurable improvements in public administration and the delivery of services to Nigerians.

With his swearing-in, Enitan officially assumes responsibility for leading the federal civil service from August 27, 2026.
