Nigeria has taken a significant step towards modernising its transport sector with the advancement of the Smart National Transport Databank Project through a strategic partnership with Egypt.
The progress followed a working visit to Cairo by the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, alongside the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajuddeen.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the FRSC’s Corps Public Education Officer, Deputy Corps Commander Osondu Ohaeri, the visit builds on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in June 2026 between the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) and Asia Arab Investment (AAI).
Speaking on the initiative, Corps Marshal Mohammed described the Smart National Transport Databank as a transformative project that would reshape road safety management and transport governance in Nigeria.

He said the availability of integrated transport data would enhance crash prediction, improve traffic management, strengthen compliance monitoring and boost overall service delivery.
The Smart National Transport Databank is expected to serve as a central digital repository for transport-related information, enabling government agencies to make data-driven decisions on road safety, traffic management, infrastructure planning and policy formulation. The initiative is also expected to improve coordination among transport stakeholders while supporting Nigeria’s broader digital transformation agenda.
Mohammed noted that accurate data, innovation and stronger institutional collaboration are critical to building safer roads and a more efficient transportation system across the country.
A major highlight of the Cairo engagement was the unveiling of proposed Driver Training and Development Centres, which will be established across Nigeria by ARCORP Egypt in partnership with FRSC and NITT under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.
The Corps Marshal said the centres would improve driver education, promote professionalism among motorists and contribute significantly to reducing road traffic crashes nationwide.
Speaker Abbas Tajuddeen reaffirmed the commitment of the National Assembly to the project, saying lawmakers would provide the necessary legislative support for its successful implementation.
According to him, the initiative is vital to Nigeria’s economic growth, digital transformation and infrastructure development.
Also speaking, the Director-General of NITT, Bayero Salih Farah, said the databank would modernise transport planning and enforcement while providing a reliable foundation for evidence-based policymaking in line with global best practices.
