President Bola Tinubu has commended the Nigerian Navy for its role in safeguarding the nation’s territorial waters and strengthening maritime security as the force marks its 70th anniversary.

Speaking during the Nigerian Navy’s 70th Anniversary celebrations, Tinubu described the Navy as a critical pillar of national security and economic stability, noting that its efforts have significantly reduced piracy, crude oil theft, and other maritime crimes in recent years.

The President, represented by senior government officials at the commemorative event, said the Navy’s achievements have contributed to improved investor confidence and enhanced protection of Nigeria’s maritime assets. He emphasized that the country’s economic growth depends heavily on secure waterways and uninterrupted maritime activities.

Tinubu praised officers and men of the service for their professionalism and dedication, stating that their sacrifices have helped preserve Nigeria’s sovereignty and secure vital trade routes. He noted that the Navy has evolved from a modest coastal force into one of Africa’s leading maritime institutions.

According to him, the administration remains committed to providing the military with modern equipment, training opportunities, and operational support to enhance effectiveness. He stressed that ongoing investments in maritime infrastructure and naval capabilities are aimed at strengthening national security and combating emerging threats.

Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, highlighted the service’s achievements over the past seven decades, including enhanced surveillance operations, anti-piracy patrols, and collaborations with regional and international partners.

Ogalla said the Navy has recorded major successes in curbing crude oil theft and illegal activities in the Gulf of Guinea. He added that improved maritime security has contributed to increased economic activity within Nigeria’s coastal regions.

The anniversary celebration featured naval demonstrations, exhibitions, and recognition of distinguished personnel who have contributed to the service’s growth. Retired officers and foreign military representatives also attended the event.

Security experts present at the ceremony noted that Nigeria’s maritime domain remains strategically important to both regional and global trade. They urged continued investment in technology and intelligence gathering to sustain recent gains.

As the Nigerian Navy enters its eighth decade, stakeholders expressed confidence that the service will continue to play a leading role in protecting the nation’s waters and supporting economic development through enhanced maritime security operations.
