Vice President Kashim Shettima has commended SpaceX for supporting the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) with Starlink satellite internet technology, describing the intervention as a major boost to Nigeria’s disaster response capabilities.
Shettima made the remarks during a presentation of the technology to NEMA, noting that reliable communication remains essential for effective emergency management, particularly in remote and disaster-affected areas.
The Vice President said the deployment of Starlink services would strengthen coordination among emergency responders and improve the agency’s ability to deliver timely assistance during crises. He added that modern technology is increasingly important in addressing complex humanitarian and environmental challenges.
NEMA officials explained that the satellite-based internet system would provide high-speed connectivity in locations where traditional communication infrastructure is unavailable or has been disrupted by disasters. This, they said, would enhance situational awareness and support faster decision-making during emergency operations.

Shettima praised SpaceX for the gesture, emphasizing the importance of public-private partnerships in advancing national resilience and disaster preparedness. He noted that technology-driven solutions can significantly improve response times and reduce the impact of emergencies on affected communities.
The agency disclosed that the new connectivity tools would be integrated into its operational framework, enabling better communication between field teams, command centres, and partner organizations. Officials expressed confidence that the technology would improve efficiency during rescue, relief, and recovery efforts.
Experts in disaster management welcomed the development, noting that communication challenges often hinder emergency response operations in difficult terrains. They argued that satellite internet could bridge connectivity gaps and facilitate real-time information sharing.
The initiative comes as authorities seek to strengthen Nigeria’s emergency management systems in the face of recurring floods, displacement crises, and other natural and human-induced disasters. Stakeholders believe improved digital infrastructure will play a vital role in enhancing preparedness and response mechanisms.
Shettima reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to leveraging innovation and strategic partnerships to protect lives and property. He said investments in technology would continue to complement broader efforts to build a more responsive and resilient emergency management framework.
The deployment of Starlink services marks another step toward modernizing emergency response operations and ensuring that critical communication remains available when it is needed most.
