Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for increased investment in rural women, urging stakeholders to expand their access to land, finance, training, technology and markets to strengthen agriculture, food security and economic development.
The First Lady made the call in her message to commemorate the International Day of Rural Women on October 15, 2026, highlighting the contributions of rural women to food production, community development and the growth of local economies.
Tinubu described rural women as important contributors to the nation’s agricultural sector and food systems, noting that their resilience and dedication remain essential to sustaining families and rural communities.
This year’s observance is particularly significant as it coincides with the International Year of the Woman Farmer, drawing renewed attention to the role of women in agriculture and the need to address the challenges limiting their productivity and economic opportunities.
The First Lady stressed that empowering rural women would deliver benefits beyond individual households, helping communities prosper and strengthening national development.
She urged the government, private sector and other relevant stakeholders to prioritise initiatives that would enable women in rural areas to participate more effectively in agricultural production and other economic activities.
According to her, improved access to land would provide women farmers with greater opportunities to cultivate crops and expand their agricultural operations, while access to finance could help them acquire inputs, equipment and other resources needed to increase productivity.
She also highlighted the importance of training and technology in helping rural women improve farming methods, respond to changing agricultural conditions and increase the value of their produce.
Access to markets, she noted, is equally important in ensuring that women farmers can sell their products, earn better incomes and contribute more meaningfully to local and national economies.
Tinubu’s message comes amid continuing discussions around food security, agricultural productivity and the need to strengthen rural livelihoods in Nigeria.
Women play significant roles across agricultural value chains, including planting, harvesting, processing, storage and marketing. However, limited access to productive resources and commercial opportunities can constrain their ability to expand their businesses and improve household incomes.
