- 250 Lagos Riverine Youths Seek ...

No fewer than 250 youths representing 125 riverine and coastal communities in Lagos State have called for government intervention in education, healthcare, transportation, infrastructure and employment to address developmental challenges confronting their communities.
The youths made the appeal at the Lagos Riverine Community Youth Leaders Dialogue, organised by the Blue Lagos Sustainability Initiative in collaboration with the New Generation Directorate at the Badore Ferry Terminal, Ajah, Lagos.
The dialogue provided a platform for youth leaders to present community-specific challenges, identify development priorities and propose solutions to improve living conditions in underserved riverine and coastal settlements.
Speaking at the event, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Blue Economy, Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, stressed the need for stronger engagement between government and young people to accelerate development across the state’s coastal communities.
Emmanuel said meaningful development required government to listen to residents, understand their needs and incorporate their perspectives into policy formulation and implementation.

He acknowledged the concerns raised by participants and assured them that their requests and recommendations would be presented to the appropriate government authorities for consideration and necessary action.
The youths highlighted challenges relating to access to quality education, healthcare facilities, employment opportunities, transportation, infrastructure, environmental sustainability and essential social services.
They also called for improved access to government programmes and interventions tailored to the geographical and socioeconomic realities of riverine communities, where difficult terrain and limited services often restrict access to opportunities.
In her goodwill message, the Director of the New Generation Directorate and APC deputy governorship candidate in Lagos State, Princess Damilola Sonayon James, urged young people to take a more active role in governance and community development.
James said youth participation should go beyond criticising government policies or expressing dissatisfaction, urging young people to contribute ideas, engage constructively with leaders and participate in decision-making at the grassroots and state levels.
She noted that young people possessed the creativity, innovation and understanding of local challenges needed to drive meaningful development.
The APC chieftain encouraged the youth leaders to remain organised, united and committed to the progress of their communities, adding that sustained engagement with government institutions was essential to achieving lasting solutions.
She also urged them to see themselves not merely as beneficiaries of government programmes but as active partners in governance and the development of Lagos State.
The dialogue featured the participation of the Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr Mobolaji Ogunlende, alongside other stakeholders from the New Generation Directorate.
Discussions centred on youth empowerment, employment, education, healthcare, environmental protection, infrastructure and community welfare, as participants called for stronger communication between residents and public institutions.
They also emphasised the need to ensure that young people from underserved riverine settlements were adequately represented in development planning and had better access to government initiatives.
The organisers said the engagement was aimed at strengthening grassroots participation and ensuring that the concerns of young people in coastal and riverine communities informed wider discussions on governance and sustainable development.
The collaboration between Blue Lagos and the New Generation Directorate also highlighted the importance of partnerships among government institutions, community leaders, youth organisations and other stakeholders in addressing the challenges confronting riverine settlements.
The initiative reaffirmed the organisers’ commitment to promoting inclusive governance, expanding opportunities for young people and strengthening community participation in the development of Lagos State’s blue economy.
