The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has criticised former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar over his comments on Nigeria’s Ebola response, defending the Federal Government’s handling of the public health emergency and insisting that the ₦10 billion approved for the response remains untouched.

In a statement issued in Abuja by its spokesperson, Dele Alake, the council accused Atiku’s camp of politicising a sensitive public health issue and urged political actors to prioritise public safety over partisan exchanges.

The statement followed criticism attributed to Atiku concerning the government’s management of the Ebola emergency fund and the circumstances surrounding the detection of an infected Nigerian traveller from Uganda.

The APC council described the former vice-president’s remarks as disrespectful to President Bola Tinubu, arguing that political criticism should not undermine public confidence during a health emergency.

It also rejected questions about the expenditure of the ₦10 billion approved by the President in June, claiming that the funds had not been spent and that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and other relevant agencies had been using existing resources to conduct surveillance.

According to the council, surveillance measures at points of entry helped alert authorities to the suspected case and supported contact-tracing efforts involving 44 people who had contact with the patient.

The council commended the agencies involved, describing their efforts as important to preventing further transmission and strengthening the country’s preparedness against the disease.

It also defended the timing of the government’s public health briefings, dismissing suggestions that the announcements were intended to discourage Nigerians from attending political campaign rallies or voting.

The APC council said such allegations required verifiable evidence, adding that the public briefing focused on communicating health protocols and encouraging compliance with measures announced by the relevant authorities.

Ebola is a severe viral disease that can cause serious illness and death. According to the World Health Organisation, the incubation period ranges from two to 21 days, and infected people generally become infectious when symptoms develop.

The APC statement urged Atiku and other opposition figures to avoid spreading unverified claims and support health professionals in managing the situation.

It called on Nigerians across political affiliations to follow official health guidance, cooperate with contact-tracing efforts and avoid spreading rumours that could undermine the public health response.

The statement concluded that protecting Nigerians from the disease should take precedence over political disagreements.

The council’s claims about the emergency fund and the circumstances surrounding the case were presented in its statement. Independent verification of the fund’s status and the broader circumstances of the incident would be necessary to establish the full picture.
