Peter Obi

Founder of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Chief Chekwas Okorie, has accused Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, of using his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to attack former governor and NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Okorie made the allegation in a statement in Abuja on Thursday, saying Soludo’s political differences with Obi could be traced to three major events in Anambra politics.

He identified the first as the 2009 governorship election, when Soludo contested against Obi and lost.

The second, according to Okorie, was Soludo’s disqualification from the APGA governorship primary in August 2013.

He said the third was the 2023 Anambra Central senatorial primary, which generated another political disagreement involving Obi and Soludo’s political camp.

Okorie also referred to Soludo’s 2022 article, “History Beckons And I Will Not Remain Silent,” in which the governor criticised aspects of Obi’s record as Anambra governor and his political ambitions.

According to the APGA founder, those developments have continued to shape the relationship between the two former governors.

Okorie, however, said Obi had maintained respect for Soludo despite the governor’s alleged criticisms.

He urged Soludo to focus his attention on governing Anambra State rather than continuing his criticism of Obi.

“There are several issues challenging the people of Anambra State that are sufficient to keep Prof. Soludo busy,” Okorie said.

He also urged the governor to leave Obi alone, saying the former governor had continued to treat him with respect.

The comments come amid renewed political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with prominent political figures taking positions around competing parties and presidential ambitions.

Soludo has publicly expressed support for President Tinubu’s re-election bid, while Obi is seeking another opportunity to contest the presidency.

Okorie’s intervention adds to the political exchanges surrounding the two former Anambra governors, whose relationship has remained a subject of debate within the state’s political circles.

The APGA founder’s allegations concerning Soludo’s motives remain his own claims, while the governor’s position on the issues raised by Okorie was not included in the statement.

Okorie’s central appeal was for Soludo to concentrate on the affairs of Anambra State and allow Obi to pursue his political activities without further attacks.
