Cristiano Ronaldo

France World Cup winner Bixente Lizarazu has blamed Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal coach Jorge Jesus and the Portuguese Football Federation for the controversy surrounding the national team.

Lizarazu argued that responsibility for the situation should not rest on one individual, saying Ronaldo, Jesus and the federation all have a role to play in resolving the issues surrounding the team.

Speaking on French television programme Téléfoot, the former France international said Ronaldo’s relationship with the national team should not be allowed to end in an abrupt or unnecessarily controversial manner.

Lizarazu also urged the veteran forward to recognise the realities associated with his age and physical condition despite his status as one of football’s greatest players.

Ronaldo, who is 41, remains a central figure in Portuguese football and has continued to attract enormous attention because of his longevity and achievements at international level.

However, his continued role within the national team has generated debate over whether Portugal should begin a more decisive transition towards a younger generation of players.

Lizarazu’s comments reflect the broader discussion surrounding the balance between experience and renewal within elite national teams.

The former France defender suggested that the responsibility for managing the situation should be shared rather than attributed solely to Ronaldo.

He also pointed towards the role of coach Jorge Jesus, whose decisions regarding the team and its senior players have come under scrutiny amid the controversy.

The Portuguese Football Federation was similarly included in Lizarazu’s criticism, with the former World Cup winner suggesting that the governing body also bears responsibility for how the situation has developed.

Ronaldo has enjoyed an extraordinary international career with Portugal, helping the country win the 2016 European Championship and the 2019 UEFA Nations League.

He has also established himself as one of the most prolific international goalscorers in football history.

Despite his achievements, questions about his future with Portugal have become increasingly prominent as the team looks towards the next phase of its development.

Lizarazu said Ronaldo should take his age and physical condition into consideration while acknowledging the extraordinary level he has maintained throughout his career.

The debate comes as Portugal continues preparations for future international competitions and seeks to balance its established stars with emerging talent.

For Lizarazu, resolving the controversy will require responsibility from all sides rather than placing the blame on Ronaldo alone.

The former France international’s comments have added to the growing discussion about the future of one of the most decorated players in international football and his place within Portugal’s next generation.
