Pete Edochie

Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has advised men against becoming financially dependent on their wives, warning that such a situation could have serious consequences for a man.

Edochie made the remarks while appearing on content creator Bae U Barbie’s podcast, Curiosity Made Me Ask, where he discussed marriage, gender roles and proposals.

The veteran actor said men should not pray to find themselves in a situation where they depend on their wives for their upkeep.

“Don’t pray for your wife to feed you. If you get into such a situation, you’d like to take poison and die,” Edochie said.

He also questioned the growing practice of men kneeling when proposing marriage, arguing that the gesture could carry implications beyond romance.

According to Edochie, kneeling before a woman to present an engagement ring could be interpreted as a man surrendering his position as head of the family before the marriage has even begun.

“If you step down on your knee and you offer a woman a ring, you are conceding headship of the family to that woman,” he said.

Edochie maintained that men who make such a gesture should not later attempt to reclaim the position they had, in his view, symbolically surrendered.

“I will not take it back,” he added.

The actor further linked his views on marriage roles to the rate of divorce in Western countries, arguing that financial arrangements between couples could have significant consequences when marriages end.

He said a wife seeking divorce in some Western jurisdictions could potentially be entitled to a substantial portion of the couple’s assets.

Edochie’s comments have reignited conversations around traditional expectations of husbands and wives, financial responsibility in marriage and the changing meaning of marriage proposals.

His remarks are likely to generate further debate, particularly among younger Nigerians whose views on relationships, gender roles and marriage increasingly differ from traditional expectations.
