President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his comments on hunger and economic hardship in Nigeria, accusing him of being part of the political leadership responsible for the challenges his administration is currently addressing.

Tinubu made the remarks on Saturday while speaking in Rivers State, where he defended his government’s approach to tackling the country’s economic difficulties and questioned the former vice president’s record in public office.

The President said his administration was working to address problems inherited from previous governments, arguing that those criticising the current economic situation should also reflect on their contributions to the country’s development when they occupied positions of authority.

Taking a direct swipe at Atiku, Tinubu questioned how the former vice president financed the establishment of a university while serving in government.

“Those people talking of hunger, I’m cleaning the mess they created. Atiku Abubakar was one of them. Ask him how he built a university while in office as vice president in charge of our economy. Who built the university for him? It’s your money,” the President said.

Tinubu’s comments appeared to challenge Atiku’s criticism of the economic hardship facing Nigerians, particularly concerns over rising food prices, declining purchasing power and the increasing cost of living.

The exchange highlights the growing political disagreement between the two leaders over the management of Nigeria’s economy and responsibility for the country’s current economic conditions.

Atiku, who served as vice president between 1999 and 2007 under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has remained an outspoken critic of the Tinubu administration’s economic policies.

He has repeatedly raised concerns about the impact of government reforms on households and businesses, particularly the removal of petrol subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange market.

Tinubu, however, has consistently defended the reforms, maintaining that difficult economic decisions were necessary to address structural weaknesses, improve government revenue and establish a more sustainable economic foundation.

The President’s latest remarks also bring renewed attention to the debate over the relationship between past government policies and the economic challenges confronting Nigerians.

While the administration has argued that its reforms are necessary for long-term economic stability, opposition figures have questioned their implementation and the immediate burden placed on citizens.

The disagreement reflects the intensifying political debate over economic accountability, governance and the effectiveness of the policies being pursued by the Federal Government.

Tinubu’s comments are expected to generate further reactions from opposition leaders and supporters of Atiku as discussions over Nigeria’s economic direction continue.
