President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has inaugurated the new international terminal at Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, paving the way for international flight operations at the facility.
The President performed the inauguration on Friday during his official visit to the state, describing the occasion as significant and reflecting on his longstanding professional and personal connections with Akwa Ibom.
Tinubu, who was accompanied by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was received at the airport by Vice President Kashim Shettima, his wife, Nana Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Governor Umo Eno.
Other government officials and dignitaries were also present to welcome the presidential delegation.
Speaking during the inauguration, Tinubu described his visit to Akwa Ibom as a homecoming, recalling his professional engagements in the state before becoming President.

He disclosed that he had previously worked in the state as an auditor with Mobil, where he witnessed and participated in activities connected with the development of Ibeno and Eket.
“This is a homecoming for me. I was here in Akwa Ibom as a Mobil auditor. We built Ibeno, developed Eket, and did what we had to do,” the President said.
Tinubu expressed delight that he had returned years later as President to inaugurate an airport named after former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Victor Attah, whom he described as a former colleague.
“I never dreamed that I would become president to commission an airport named after my then-colleague governor,” he added.
The inauguration represents a major development in Akwa Ibom State’s aviation infrastructure, with the new terminal expected to strengthen the airport’s capacity to accommodate international air travel.
The commencement of international operations is also expected to improve connectivity between Akwa Ibom and overseas destinations, potentially creating opportunities for tourism, trade, investment and business development.
The airport project is part of the state’s broader efforts to position Uyo as an important destination for commercial activities and economic growth in the South-South region.
During the visit, Tinubu also commended Senate President Godswill Akpabio, acknowledging his contributions and political engagements in the state.
The President’s itinerary includes participation in an All Progressives Congress presidential campaign rally, where party leaders, stakeholders and supporters are expected to mobilise support for the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The inauguration comes amid growing efforts by state governments to strengthen aviation infrastructure and improve regional connectivity as part of broader economic development strategies.
For Akwa Ibom, the new terminal is expected to provide an important gateway for international travellers while supporting the state’s ambition to attract greater investment and expand its economic opportunities.
