Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has urged residents of Bende Federal Constituency in Abia State to vote massively for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, citing the administration’s performance in infrastructure development and electricity provision.
Kalu made the appeal while distributing electricity transformers and solar power systems to communities across Bende under the *Light Up Bende Phase 1 and 2* initiative, which he said was approved and empowered by President Tinubu.
The lawmaker, who represents Bende Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, described the provision of electricity and other infrastructure as evidence of the Federal Government’s commitment to improving living conditions, urging his constituents to support Tinubu’s bid for a second term.
He said the administration’s Renewed Hope agenda was delivering development to communities, adding that access to electricity would improve household welfare and create opportunities for residents.
According to Kalu, the solar power distribution programme is expected to reach more than 40,000 households across Bende, making the constituency a major beneficiary of the initiative.
“In the entire nation, there is no single local government that takes this enormous number of 40,000 connections. It means that every home in Bende Local Government has been connected to free light. There’s no more darkness in Bende LGA,” he said.
The Deputy Speaker maintained that the intervention went beyond providing electricity, explaining that access to power would add value to homes and improve the quality of life of residents.
“Not just light; we give value to homes. This is the work of the President,” Kalu told beneficiaries at the distribution event.
About 1,000 recipients attended the event, where electricity transformers and solar power systems were distributed as part of efforts to expand access to electricity in communities across the constituency.
Kalu said the initiative reflected the impact of the Federal Government’s support for development projects at the grassroots, adding that the programme was designed to address electricity challenges and provide residents with an alternative source of power.
He also disclosed that his office had trained youths from different communities in Bende on the installation and use of the solar systems.
According to him, the training component was intended to equip young people with practical technical skills while creating opportunities for self-employment and economic empowerment.
The initiative is expected to enable trained youths to support the installation and maintenance of the solar systems, potentially expanding their access to income-generating opportunities within their communities.
Kalu said combining electricity provision with skills development would help ensure that the intervention delivered benefits beyond the immediate distribution of equipment.
The programme comes amid continued national discussions over electricity access, energy costs and the need to improve power supply to households and businesses.
For communities where electricity remains unreliable, solar systems offer an alternative that can support domestic activities and small businesses, while reducing dependence on conventional power sources.
Kalu urged his constituents to recognise the administration’s interventions and demonstrate their support at the polls in 2027.
He maintained that Tinubu deserved another term, pointing to the projects being implemented and the administration’s stated commitment to infrastructure development.
The Light Up Bende programme forms part of Kalu’s constituency-focused interventions, with Phase 1 and Phase 2 targeting communities through the distribution of transformers and solar power systems.
The lawmaker said the scale of the initiative demonstrated the importance of collaboration between the Federal Government and elected representatives in bringing development projects to local communities.
With more than 40,000 households targeted for solar connections, the programme is expected to remain a significant part of the electricity intervention being promoted by Kalu’s office in Bende Federal Constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections.
