Vice President Kashim Shettima has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi over their records in public office, accusing them of offering inadequate economic and political alternatives to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Shettima made the remarks on Saturday during the Rainbow Coalition Presidential Campaign Rally at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he defended Tinubu’s economic policies and called on residents to support the President’s re-election bid in 2027.
The Vice President described Atiku as intellectually malnourished over his economic positions, alleging that the former vice president had been influenced by economists whose recommendations favoured unsustainable subsidy policies.
“Atiku Abubakar, tied to his school of thought, is intellectually malnourished and was ill-advised by some voodoo economists to resort to unsustainable subsidies,” Shettima said.
He also criticised Obi’s political record, describing his political approach as an attempt to maintain relevance through philosophical arguments rather than demonstrating a strong record of governance.
Shettima questioned Obi’s performance during his eight years as governor of Anambra State, describing his administration’s achievements as mediocre.

He further questioned Obi’s record in the banking sector, referring to his previous position as chairman of a Nigerian bank.
According to the Vice President, the financial institution experienced improved performance after Obi left the position.
“And my friend Peter Obi has ingeniously philosophised himself into political irrelevance. For eight years, he was governor of Anambra State, and his performance was, at best, mediocre,” he said.
“He was the chairman of a bank in Nigeria, and his performance there was equally mediocre. It was only after his exit that that particular bank began to thrive.”
Shettima also accused the former Anambra governor of focusing on the consumption of resources within the state rather than pursuing broader economic opportunities and international expansion.
“While others were striving for global reach, Peter Obi was busy consuming his own Anambra State,” the Vice President added.
The comments form part of the growing political exchanges between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general election.
Atiku, who served as vice president from 1999 to 2007, has remained a vocal critic of the Tinubu administration, particularly its handling of economic reforms, rising living costs and the removal of the petrol subsidy.
Obi, who served as Anambra governor from 2006 to 2014, has also criticised the Federal Government’s economic policies, raising concerns about poverty, unemployment and the impact of inflation on Nigerian households.
Both opposition figures have featured prominently in national discussions about alternative economic policies and the direction of the country.
Shettima, however, used the Rivers rally to defend Tinubu’s approach, arguing that the President demonstrated political courage by confronting longstanding economic challenges rather than maintaining policies he considered unsustainable.
He maintained that the administration’s reforms were designed to strengthen public finances, attract investment and create a foundation for long-term economic growth.
The Vice President also appealed to Rivers residents to renew their support for Tinubu in 2027, thanking political leaders and members of the Rainbow Coalition for their mobilisation efforts.
His remarks are expected to generate further reactions from supporters of Atiku and Obi as political discussions intensify ahead of the next presidential election.
