The Independent Corrupt Practices ICPC and Other Related Offences Commission has asked the court to dismiss a ₦1 billion fundamental rights suit filed by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
The anti-corruption agency argued that the former governor’s claims did not provide sufficient grounds for the court to intervene in the matter.
El-Rufai had approached the court seeking legal protection over issues connected with actions involving the commission.
In its response, the ICPC challenged the basis of the former governor’s claims and urged the court to reject the suit.
The commission maintained that the allegations contained in the suit did not establish a violation of El-Rufai’s fundamental rights that would warrant the reliefs being sought.
The case forms part of broader legal developments surrounding the former Kaduna governor and investigations into allegations linked to his administration.

El-Rufai has consistently denied wrongdoing and challenged actions taken against him, insisting on the protection of his constitutional rights.
The ICPC, however, has maintained its position in the legal proceedings and is asking the court to dismiss the former governor’s ₦1 billion claim.
Fundamental rights suits are designed to provide legal remedies where an individual alleges that rights guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution have been breached or are under threat.
The court is expected to consider arguments from both sides before determining whether the former governor has established sufficient grounds for the case to proceed.
The ICPC’s application adds another dimension to the ongoing legal battle involving El-Rufai and the anti-corruption authorities.
The former governor served as Kaduna State governor from 2015 to 2023 and has remained an influential figure in Nigerian politics since leaving office.
His administration in Kaduna pursued several reforms, particularly in infrastructure, public service and education, but also faced controversies over governance and public expenditure.
Since leaving office, El-Rufai has faced scrutiny over aspects of his administration, with investigations and political disputes generating significant public attention.
The former governor has repeatedly maintained that allegations against him should be subjected to due process.
The latest court proceedings will determine whether his fundamental rights claim can proceed or whether the ICPC’s request for dismissal will be granted.
The case is expected to attract further attention as the court considers the submissions of the parties.
For now, the ICPC is asking the court to reject the ₦1 billion claim, while El-Rufai continues to pursue the legal remedies available to him.
