Nigeria has commenced early preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, with the National Sports Commission (NSC) and Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) participating in a pre-Games meeting in Los Angeles, United States, to strengthen the country’s planning and coordination ahead of the global sporting event.

The country was represented at the meeting by the NSC Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, and NOC President, Engr. Habu Gumel, who joined representatives of participating nations and key Olympic stakeholders to discuss preparations for the Games.

The meeting provides an opportunity for national Olympic committees and sports authorities to engage with organisers, obtain relevant information and align their preparations with the requirements of the 2028 Olympics.

Nigeria’s participation reflects efforts by the country’s sports administration to begin planning early, improve institutional collaboration and establish a coordinated strategy for Team Nigeria’s participation.

Speaking on the importance of the engagement, Olopade said early planning and sustained coordination were critical to achieving better results at the Olympics.

He stressed that preparations for a competition of such magnitude must begin long before athletes arrive at the host city, noting that effective planning, institutional cooperation and early engagement with the Olympic movement were essential to the country’s ambitions.

According to him, Nigeria intends to build on lessons from previous Olympic Games while strengthening preparations to ensure athletes receive the necessary support, facilities and competitive opportunities.

Olopade said the country’s ambition extended beyond participation, emphasising the need to prepare adequately and compete at a high level on the global stage.

The joint participation of the NSC and NOC leadership also highlights the importance of collaboration between government sports authorities and the country’s Olympic governing body in developing a unified approach to the Games.

The partnership is expected to support coordination across athlete preparation, sports development and other areas necessary for Nigeria’s Olympic campaign.

The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games are scheduled to hold from July 14 to July 30, 2028. The event will mark the third time Los Angeles has hosted the Summer Olympics, following previous editions in 1932 and 1984.

As preparations gather momentum internationally, Nigeria’s involvement in the pre-Games meeting marks an early step in its journey towards LA28.

The NSC and NOC are expected to continue working together to strengthen the country’s preparations, with the objective of ensuring that Team Nigeria arrives in Los Angeles adequately prepared to compete against the world’s leading athletes.
