Bashir El-Rufai

A fresh family and political dispute has erupted among the sons of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai after Bashir El-Rufai publicly criticised his elder brother, Bello El-Rufai, over his position on the political disagreement involving their father and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani.

Bello El-Rufai, who represents Kaduna North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, was accused by Bashir of hypocrisy, substance abuse and betraying the family.

Bashir made the allegations in a series of social media posts in which he launched a strong attack against his brother.

In one of the posts, Bashir alleged that Bello had a substance around his nostrils and accused him of preferring alcohol and cocaine.

The allegations, however, remain unsubstantiated, and there was no independent evidence immediately available to support the claims.

The public confrontation has added a new dimension to the political disagreements surrounding El-Rufai and Sani, who were previously political allies before their relationship deteriorated after the former governor left office.

The dispute between the former governor and his successor has increasingly featured in Kaduna’s political discourse, with questions surrounding the direction of political alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Bello, a member of the House of Representatives, has maintained a public political profile since his election to the National Assembly. His political position has at times differed from that of his father, creating speculation about divisions within the El-Rufai political family.

Bashir’s latest comments have now brought those disagreements into the open, with the family dispute unfolding publicly on social media.

The accusations against Bello are particularly serious because they involve claims of illegal drug use and other personal conduct. Such allegations require evidence and cannot by themselves establish wrongdoing.

Bashir also accused his brother of hypocrisy and of failing to stand with their father amid the political disagreement with Governor Sani.

The latest confrontation has attracted attention because of the prominent political profile of the El-Rufai family and the continuing relevance of the former governor in Kaduna politics.

Neither Bello El-Rufai nor his representatives had, at the time of filing this report, publicly responded to the specific allegations contained in Bashir’s social media posts.

The dispute comes as political parties and their prominent figures begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections, when Kaduna is expected to remain an important battleground.

For now, the allegations remain claims made by Bashir against his elder brother and have not been established by any competent authority.

TheTraffic.ng reports that the development marks another public disagreement within the El-Rufai family amid the wider political tensions surrounding the former governor and Governor Uba Sani.
