He added that the businessman had also played a significant role in supporting the electoral campaign and victory efforts of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
According to the statement, the appointment was intended to strengthen the party’s leadership structure in the state and provide a more coordinated direction for its activities ahead of future elections.
Ogbonnia is expected to provide political leadership for the party in Enugu as it expands its membership and structures across the state.
The appointment comes at a time when political parties are increasingly repositioning their structures ahead of the 2027 general election, with party executives seeking to consolidate their grassroots presence and mobilise supporters.
The NDC leadership said Ogbonnia’s experience and commitment would be useful in advancing the party’s objectives in the state.
The party also expressed confidence that his appointment would help deepen its organisational capacity and strengthen engagement with stakeholders and supporters across Enugu.
The development is expected to generate further political activities within the party as the new state leader begins consultations with party members and other stakeholders.
Ogbonnia, a Nigerian-American businessman, has been involved in political advocacy and activities connected with Nigeria’s electoral process.
His emergence as the NDC leader in Enugu also comes with expectations that the party will intensify its mobilisation efforts and build stronger structures ahead of the next electoral cycle.
The party has not announced a detailed programme outlining the new leader’s immediate responsibilities or specific targets following his appointment.
However, the decision by the expanded state executive indicates the party’s intention to strengthen its leadership and organisational framework in Enugu.
The NDC is expected to continue its consultations and grassroots mobilisation as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections gather momentum.
