The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has ordered the immediate arrest and prosecution of motorists found driving vehicles without valid number plates across Abuja.

The directive is part of measures by the command to strengthen vehicle identification, improve road security and ensure compliance with relevant traffic regulations in the nation’s capital.

The command said officers deployed across the FCT are expected to enforce the directive and take appropriate legal action against motorists who violate the requirement.

Motorists operating vehicles without valid number plates are expected to face arrest and prosecution rather than being allowed to continue driving after routine checks.

The directive is expected to affect vehicles displaying no registration plates, as well as motorists using plates that are invalid or otherwise do not meet the requirements of the relevant authorities.

The police said the enforcement is aimed at improving the ability of security agencies to identify vehicles and trace their owners when such vehicles are linked to traffic violations or criminal activities.

Vehicle identification is considered an important component of security operations because valid number plates provide authorities with a means of establishing the identity and registration details of vehicles on the road.

The FCT Police Command also urged motorists to ensure that their vehicles are properly registered and fitted with valid number plates before using public roads.

The command advised vehicle owners who have yet to regularise their documentation to do so to avoid arrest and possible prosecution.

The enforcement is expected to involve police personnel conducting checks on major roads and other locations within the FCT.

The police have also continued to call on residents to cooperate with law-enforcement personnel during traffic and security operations.

The latest directive comes amid broader efforts to improve security and traffic management in Abuja, where the increasing number of vehicles and growing population have placed additional pressure on the city’s road network.

The command said compliance with vehicle registration requirements would help security agencies perform their duties more effectively and support efforts to maintain law and order.

Motorists have therefore been advised to confirm that their number plates are valid and properly displayed before embarking on journeys within the Federal Capital Territory.

Those found violating the directive risk arrest and prosecution in accordance with applicable laws.

The police said the enforcement would continue as part of its efforts to strengthen security and ensure greater compliance with traffic regulations across Abuja.
