Enyimba

Enyimba have recorded their first victory of the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League season after defeating Shooting Stars 4-2 in a rearranged fixture at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba.

The People’s Elephant produced a strong attacking display on Wednesday, September 30, to secure their first three points of the campaign.

Richard Ezinna opened the scoring seven minutes into the match after Enyimba applied pressure high up the pitch.

The hosts continued to control proceedings and doubled their advantage in the 29th minute through Damian Chibueze Ezeifule.

Idris Abubakar added a third goal nine minutes before half-time, giving Enyimba a commanding 3-0 lead at the break.

Enyimba maintained their attacking momentum after the restart and extended their advantage four minutes into the second half.

Ifeanyi Ihemekwele scored the fourth goal in the 49th minute after receiving a pass from Wonah William and finishing the move to put the home side four goals ahead.

Shooting Stars responded with a goal in the 76th minute when substitute Mustapha Adams Agba’a found the net.

The visitors continued to search for another goal and reduced the deficit further in stoppage time through Johnmark Aule.

However, Enyimba held on during the closing stages to secure a 4-2 victory and claim their first win of the season.

The result represents a significant turnaround for the Aba-based side after a difficult start to the campaign.

Before Wednesday’s encounter, Enyimba had struggled to collect maximum points from their opening fixtures, making the emphatic victory particularly important as the league campaign progresses.

The match was one of the rearranged fixtures in the NPFL schedule. The game had initially been scheduled for Matchday Two but was postponed to accommodate Shooting Stars’ participation in the CAF Confederation Cup.

The four-goal performance also provided Enyimba with an attacking boost, with four different players getting on the scoresheet.

Shooting Stars, despite conceding four goals, showed resilience in the final stages by scoring twice and reducing the margin.

The victory gives Enyimba renewed momentum ahead of their subsequent league fixtures as they seek to climb the NPFL standings.

The result also adds another chapter to the long-standing rivalry between two established Nigerian football clubs.

Enyimba, one of Nigeria’s most successful domestic clubs, will now look to build on the performance as the season continues.

For Shooting Stars, the defeat leaves the Ibadan-based side with the task of regrouping and improving their defensive performance ahead of their next league assignment.

The NPFL continues this weekend with another round of fixtures.
