President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to address Nigerians on Thursday, October 1, 2026, as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
The presidential broadcast is scheduled for 7 a.m., according to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Television, radio and other electronic media organisations have been directed to join the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria for the national broadcast.
The address will be Tinubu’s fourth Independence Day broadcast since he assumed office as President in May 2023.
The 2026 anniversary is being observed on a relatively low-key basis, with the Federal Government earlier constituting an Inter-Ministerial Committee to coordinate activities for the celebration.
The committee, chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, was tasked with organising approved anniversary activities and documenting the events.
The anniversary provides an opportunity for the government and citizens to reflect on Nigeria’s journey since independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960.
Ahead of the anniversary, the government said the occasion would also be used to remember the sacrifices of Nigeria’s founding fathers and heroines and examine the progress recorded over the decades.

The programme of activities included a world press conference, Juma’at service and interdenominational church service.
Tinubu’s address comes as Nigerians continue to contend with economic, security and social challenges, while the administration continues to implement reforms in areas including taxation, infrastructure, energy and economic management.
The President is expected to use the broadcast to speak on the administration’s assessment of the country’s progress and its priorities for the coming period.
Earlier on Thursday, the State House published the President’s Independence Day address under the theme, “From Reform to Prosperity.”
In the speech, Tinubu said Nigeria had passed through difficult stages and described the country as entering a new phase focused on prosperity, production and improved living standards.
The broadcast will be transmitted nationwide as Nigeria commemorates 66 years of independence.
The anniversary is expected to feature messages from political leaders, civil society organisations, businesses and citizens reflecting on the country’s achievements, challenges and future.
