Nyesom Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will resign from the Federal Executive Council if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu loses the 2027 presidential election in the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State.

Wike made the declaration during an engagement with members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja.

The former Rivers State governor said his continued stay in President Tinubu’s cabinet would depend on his ability to deliver electoral support for the President in the two territories.

He specifically stated that if Tinubu loses Rivers and the FCT in the presidential election scheduled for January 16, 2027, he would announce his resignation as FCT Minister the following day.

Wike explained that Rivers is his home state, while the FCT is the territory where he currently works as minister.

According to him, failure to deliver electoral victory in both places would amount to a failure on his part and would make his continued stay in office difficult to justify.

“If I cannot deliver where I work, then I’m not worthy to be here,” Wike was quoted as saying during the engagement.

He also linked his position to his approach to political responsibility, insisting that he considers electoral performance an important measure of political leadership.

The minister has been openly campaigning for Tinubu’s re-election and has been mobilising support for the President ahead of the 2027 election.

At the Abuja meeting, Wike also called on members of different political parties and residents of the FCT to work together under the political coalition supporting Tinubu.

He endorsed Tinubu for the presidency and identified other candidates the coalition intends to support in legislative elections in the FCT.

Wike’s declaration adds another dimension to the political calculations ahead of the 2027 presidential election, particularly because of his political history in Rivers State and his current responsibility for the FCT.

The minister governed Rivers State from 2015 to 2023 before joining Tinubu’s cabinet as FCT Minister.

During the engagement, Wike also spoke about the planned relocation of mechanics and traders operating in the Apo area to Wasa.

He assured the traders that arrangements for the relocation would be pursued, while highlighting infrastructure projects undertaken in the area.

The minister’s statement has placed his political future directly alongside the electoral fortunes of the President in Rivers and the FCT.

The 2027 presidential election is scheduled for January 16, 2027, according to Wike’s remarks and reports of the engagement.
