The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, in the 2027 general election, Omoyele Sowore, has alleged that Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, does not have full control of the affairs of the state.

Sowore made the allegation on Thursday while appearing on News Central Television’s breakfast programme, where he questioned Adeleke’s leadership and challenged some of the achievements credited to the governor’s administration.

The AAC presidential candidate alleged that significant influence over the affairs of the state rests with members of Adeleke’s family, particularly his sister and elder brother, Adedeji Adeleke, who is the father of Nigerian music star Davido.

Sowore’s comments come ahead of the Osun State governorship election, with political parties and candidates intensifying their campaigns and making final efforts to persuade voters.

The allegation adds another dimension to the political contest, which has seen major parties and political figures engage in increasingly intense exchanges over the performance and leadership of the Adeleke administration.

While discussing the governor’s record, Sowore questioned some of the achievements attributed to Adeleke and raised concerns about the manner in which the state is being governed.

His remarks are likely to generate political reactions, particularly from supporters of the governor and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who have continued to defend Adeleke’s administration and highlight projects undertaken since he assumed office.

The allegation regarding family influence also touches on a recurring issue in Nigerian politics, where questions are sometimes raised about the role of relatives and close associates in government.

Sowore, who is expected to contest the 2027 presidential election under the AAC, has remained critical of established political parties and political elites. His latest comments extend that criticism to the leadership of Osun State.

The governor’s administration has previously presented its record in infrastructure, education, healthcare and other sectors as evidence of its performance in office.

As the governorship election approaches, the political atmosphere in Osun has become increasingly competitive, with rival parties seeking to define the performance of the incumbent administration before voters.

Sowore’s assessment therefore forms part of the wider political debate over Adeleke’s leadership and the direction of the state.

The governor and his supporters will face the task of convincing voters that the administration has delivered on its promises and that Adeleke remains firmly in charge of government affairs.

With voting approaching, competing claims by politicians are expected to increase as parties make their final appeals to the electorate.

Ultimately, voters in Osun State will determine whether Adeleke retains the governorship and how they assess his administration at the ballot box.
