The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for political parties to submit the names of their candidates for the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections ahead of the February 2027 general election.

The commission said the submission deadline, initially scheduled to close on Saturday, August 8, 2026, would now remain open until Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, announced the extension in a statement issued on Saturday.

According to the commission, the decision followed appeals from political parties seeking additional time to complete the submission and upload of candidates’ details on the commission’s dedicated portal.

“INEC wishes to inform political parties and the public that it has approved an extension of the deadline for the submission, upload on the dedicated portal, of the list of candidates for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections for the February 2027 General Election,” the statement said.

The commission explained that the revised timetable had originally fixed August 8, 2026, as the closing date for the submission of candidates for the affected elections.

It, however, said the deadline had been shifted by three days in response to requests by political parties.

“The submission window, which according to the revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the General Election was originally scheduled to close Saturday, 8th August, 2026, has been extended to Tuesday, 11th August, 2026,” INEC said.

The extension gives political parties more time to conclude internal processes and upload the details of candidates nominated to contest the governorship and State Assembly elections.

The affected elections are part of preparations for the February 2027 general election, which will see Nigerians elect leaders into various political offices across the country.

INEC urged political parties to take advantage of the extended window and ensure that all required information and candidate details are submitted through the appropriate platform before the new deadline.

The commission did not indicate whether further extensions would be granted after Tuesday, August 11.

The development comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general election, with internal consultations and candidate selection processes expected to gather momentum across the states.
