President Bola Tinubu has approved a significant upward review of salaries for personnel of the Armed Forces, raising pay by as much as 80 per cent for some ranks in what is being described as one of the most substantial welfare packages for military personnel in recent years.

The approval increases the annual military wage bill from about ₦660 billion to approximately ₦924 billion, reflecting the Federal Government’s commitment to improving the welfare of officers and soldiers amid ongoing security operations across the country.

Under the new salary structure, personnel across various ranks will receive increases of 80, 50 and 30 per cent, depending on their cadre and level of service. Government officials said the review was designed to boost morale, enhance operational efficiency and strengthen the military’s capacity to tackle the country’s security challenges.

The decision comes at a time when the Armed Forces remain heavily engaged in counter-insurgency operations in the North-East, anti-banditry campaigns in the North-West, anti-oil theft operations in the Niger Delta and efforts to combat kidnapping and other violent crimes nationwide.

Officials believe improved remuneration will help address concerns over personnel welfare while encouraging greater dedication and professionalism among troops deployed in difficult operational environments.

The salary adjustment forms part of the Tinubu administration’s broader reforms aimed at strengthening national security institutions. Since assuming office, the administration has repeatedly pledged to provide better equipment, improved accommodation, healthcare and enhanced welfare packages for security personnel.

Military analysts say adequate welfare remains a critical factor in sustaining troop morale, particularly as security agencies continue to confront increasingly sophisticated criminal networks and terrorist groups.

Although the increased wage bill will place additional pressure on government finances, economic experts argue that investment in security remains essential for national stability and economic growth. Improved security, they note, is expected to encourage investment, protect critical infrastructure and create a more conducive environment for businesses.

The latest salary review also follows wider efforts by the Federal Government to reform public sector compensation while balancing fiscal sustainability.

Many serving personnel and military veterans have welcomed the announcement, describing it as long overdue. They expressed optimism that the improved salaries would ease financial pressures on service members and their families.

The Federal Government is expected to provide further details on the implementation timeline, including when the new salary structure will take effect and how arrears, if any, will be handled.
