Troops of Operation Hadin Kai neutralised 1,106 Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province terrorists during military operations in Borno State under the tenure of outgoing Theatre Commander, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar.

Abubakar disclosed the figure during his farewell address at Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri, where he formally handed over the command of Operation Hadin Kai to Major General Ibikunle Ajose.

According to the former theatre commander, the military’s operations also resulted in the arrest of 758 suspected logistics collaborators linked to the insurgent groups.

He said more than 350 terrorist commanders were among those killed during his 17-month tenure overseeing counter-insurgency operations in the North-East.

Several senior commanders were identified among those neutralised, including Abu Bilal Al-Muniki, Malam Jidda, Abu Modu, Modu Dogo, Munzir of Dogon Chukun, Abu Aisha and Abul Kaka.

Abubakar said the military operations combined kinetic and non-kinetic approaches aimed at weakening terrorist networks and supporting the restoration of normal economic and social activities in affected communities.

The operations also produced recoveries of weapons and ammunition from areas where troops conducted operations.

Reports from the military theatre indicate that more than 475 assorted weapons and 24,409 rounds of ammunition were recovered, while 295 improvised explosive devices were discovered and safely detonated.

Security forces also intercepted more than N300 million in illicit funds allegedly linked to financiers of the insurgent groups, according to the outgoing commander.

The latest figures provide an overview of the military’s reported operations against Boko Haram and ISWAP in Borno during Abubakar’s tenure.

Operation Hadin Kai remains the military’s principal counter-insurgency formation in the North-East, where security forces have continued operations against terrorist groups for more than a decade.

The region has experienced persistent attacks, displacement and disruption of economic activity as a result of insurgency.

Beyond the reported casualties among terrorists, military operations have also focused on disrupting logistics networks and recovering weapons used by insurgent groups.

The change in theatre command comes as the armed forces continue efforts to contain terrorist activity and improve security across Borno and neighbouring areas.

Abubakar’s handover to Ajose marks another phase in the military’s ongoing campaign against insurgency in the North-East.
