The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticised the University of Abuja chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over its threat to shut down the institution following allegations of illegal allocation of university land.

The dispute centres on accusations that the FCT minister allocated portions of the University of Abuja’s land in the Giri District to private individuals and companies despite an existing court order restraining him from interfering with the disputed property.

ASUU’s University of Abuja chairman, Sylvanus Ugoh, had accused Wike of disregarding a judicial directive and warned that the union could take action that might disrupt academic activities if the alleged interference continued.

The union said Justice F.E. Mesiri of the Maitama High Court granted an interlocutory injunction on August 18, 2026, restraining the minister from entering or interfering with the disputed land.

The development has intensified tensions between the FCT administration and the university community, with ASUU expressing concern over the protection of the institution’s land and its long-term interests.

Reacting to the union’s position, Wike slammed the university chapter over its threat to shut down the institution, raising questions about the union’s approach to resolving the disagreement.

The minister’s criticism comes amid growing controversy surrounding land ownership, allocation and development within the Federal Capital Territory.

University lands are often reserved for academic expansion, research facilities, student accommodation and other institutional infrastructure. Disputes over such properties can therefore have significant implications for the development and future planning of higher institutions.

ASUU’s position suggests that the disagreement is not merely about land allocation but also concerns compliance with judicial decisions and the protection of university property.

The interlocutory injunction cited by the union places the court proceedings at the centre of the dispute, although the specific legal implications of the order and the parties’ subsequent actions remain matters for judicial determination.

The disagreement could further strain relations between the FCT administration and the university’s academic community if both sides fail to reach an acceptable resolution.

The University of Abuja, now known as Yakubu Gowon University, remains an important federal institution serving students from across the country.

Further developments are expected as the controversy over the disputed land and the threatened industrial action continues.
