The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old suspected thug, Umar Usman, popularly known as Ta’ambo, over alleged involvement in street gang activities and mobile phone robberies in Rimin Kebe and neighbouring communities.

The suspect was arrested at about 8:40 pm on Thursday by surveillance operatives attached to the Zango Police Division following credible intelligence and weeks of monitoring, the police said.

The command’s spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

According to the statement, Usman, who resides in Rimin Kebe, allegedly coordinated thuggery activities and organised mobile phone robberies across Rimin Kebe, Ramin Research Area and areas around Galula Hospital.

The police said his arrest followed sustained intelligence gathering and surveillance aimed at identifying individuals suspected of contributing to criminal activities in the affected communities.

The command described the arrest as part of its ongoing efforts to tackle street crimes, particularly thuggery, phone snatching and other forms of robbery threatening public safety in Kano State.

The suspect is currently in police custody as investigations continue to establish the full extent of his alleged involvement and identify other individuals who may be connected to the criminal activities.

The police did not immediately disclose whether any stolen mobile phones or weapons were recovered during the operation.

The command also did not provide details of specific robbery incidents allegedly linked to the suspect or the number of victims involved.

However, the arrest is expected to assist investigators in uncovering the activities of suspected criminal networks operating within the affected neighbourhoods.

Street gang activities, popularly referred to as thuggery in parts of northern Nigeria, have remained a security concern, with residents frequently raising concerns over attacks, intimidation, phone snatching and violence involving rival groups.

The Kano Police Command has continued to intensify intelligence-led operations and patrols as part of efforts to curb criminal activities and improve security across the state.

Residents have also been encouraged to provide credible information to security agencies to support efforts to identify and apprehend individuals involved in criminal activities.

The police urged members of the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with officers, assuring residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property.

The command said investigations into the case were ongoing.
