First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged Nigerians to embrace charity, kindness and volunteerism as the country joins the rest of the world to mark the 2026 International Day of Charity.
Tinubu made the call in a message commemorating the annual observance, stressing that collective acts of generosity could help reduce poverty, strengthen communities and support vulnerable Nigerians.
She said charity should not be viewed merely as the act of giving material resources, but as a means of restoring hope and extending support to people facing difficult circumstances.
According to the First Lady, even seemingly small acts of kindness can have a significant impact on the lives of individuals and families in need.
“Charity is more than giving; it is about extending a helping hand, restoring hope, and supporting those in need,” she said.

Tinubu encouraged Nigerians to demonstrate greater compassion towards the less privileged, particularly vulnerable members of society who require assistance and support.
She also called for increased participation in volunteer activities, noting that individuals and communities could contribute to creating a more caring and inclusive society through collective action.
The First Lady said the challenges confronting vulnerable populations require more than government intervention, stressing the importance of citizens playing their part in supporting those who may be struggling.
She added that acts of generosity, whether through financial donations, material support, personal time or volunteer service, could contribute to improving the wellbeing of people and communities.
“Every act of kindness, no matter how small, can make a meaningful difference in the life of another,” Tinubu said.
The International Day of Charity is observed annually to promote charitable activities, philanthropy and volunteerism while encouraging greater public awareness of the role of charity in addressing humanitarian and social challenges.
The 2026 observance provides an opportunity for individuals, organisations, communities and governments to reflect on ways of supporting people affected by poverty, inequality and other forms of vulnerability.
Tinubu urged Nigerians to use the occasion to renew their commitment to helping others and building stronger communities.
She said sustained cooperation and compassion among citizens would be important in ensuring that vulnerable people are not excluded from opportunities for a better life.
“Through our collective action, we can help reduce poverty, strengthen our communities, and ensure that no one is left behind,” the First Lady said.
She concluded her message by wishing Nigerians a happy International Day of Charity and encouraging citizens to make kindness and generosity part of their everyday lives.
